The Art of Processing Trauma and Disaster
Trauma and disaster can fundamentally alter one's life in an instant, forever changing all sense of normalcy, memory, and security. Survival in this new reality often requires a profound recalibration of one's self-narrative, involving the difficult process of confronting raw memories and emotions to build new pathways for stability, understanding and survival. This process requires constant dissection, and analysis. A painful revisiting that happens internally and externally A THOUSAND TIMES over.
A THOUSAND TIMES, is a photography / sound exhibition featuring the work of seven artists whose practices have undergone a dramatic shift following a traumatic incident. This is not easy work and is often rooted in pain, confusion and feelings of hopelessness. Work is often created out of necessity and the act of 'making' is often more important than the final aesthetic outcome. Making work can be physically and emotionally overwhelming as each work is a testament to the decision to survive the unthinkable. It is a way to mentally climb out of catastrophe by meeting it head on in order to keep from falling further into darkness. The work explores the repetition of thought, the use of physical evidence and the emotional reframing necessary to find power and resilience through vulnerability in a post-traumatic world.
